Beth and Laura are the partnership behind Understanding Minds LLP. Beth and Laura are registered with the Health & Care Professions Council and have extensive NHS autism assessment experience.
We provide multidisciplinary autism assessments for children and young people across the North East of England, West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire. Our Clinical Psychology and Speech and Language Therapy partnership brings together extensive professional expertise and lived family experience of neurodivergence, shaping a practice that is genuinely respectful and person centred.

Laura is a qualified Speech & Language Therapist. She holds a BSc (Hons) Speech & Language Therapy. She is trained in gold standard assessment tools including Autism Diagnosis Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) & Autism Diagnostic Interview– Revised (ADI-R).
Laura has been leading autism assessments since 2021 and has worked as part of an MDT Autism Assessment Team since 2010. She has been working in a Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist role with the clinical specialism of autism since 2010. She has supervised MDT clinicians in a specialist NHS autism team since 2021. Laura holds membership with RCSLT and ASLTIP. Our practice fully complies with the professional, ethical and clinical standards required by these organisations.
Laura has particular specialism in assessing pre-school age children and children with language differences including gestalt language learners and children with developmental language disorder.
Beth is a Clinical Psychologist. She has a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (DClinpsy) and a BSc (Hons) Applied Psychology. Beth is trained in gold standard assessment tools including ADOS-2, ADI-R and the Diagnostic Interview for Social & Communication Disorders (DISCO).
Beth has been leading autism assessments since 2007 and has supervised other Clinical Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists & other MDT clinicians in a specialist NHS autism team since 2012.
Beth has an interest in working with girls and people who have learned to mask their differences, and she particularly enjoys working with teenagers to explore how different parts of our identities (e.g. gender, sexuality, neurotype) come together and shape our experiences.
